ALLENBY 45 PIANOS R E C O R D S MUSIC Also second-hand articles fallacious one and, in view of the surpassing number and importance of Jewish musicians in the post-classical and present eras, could only arise from a complete disregard of the political and sociological conditions which were determining factors in the fateful history of the Jews. Art is not merely the creative act of the individual, but also expresses the active contact of the individual with some community of minds, synthetiz- ing and symbolising the emotions that are latent in any given society, their ideals, their longings, their hopes, and their despairs. Hence art is only possible in an appropriate atmosphere arising out of communal life. This is especially true of music which does not materialize until it is both performed and heard. But from this atmosphere Jews were entirely cut off by their cultural, social and political seclusion during centuries of ghetto life. It was only the introduction of emancipation, which Napoleon imposed, more or less, on the mid-European States, that first created the possibility for contact for Jews with the prevailing European culture. Upon the fall of Napoleon there arose within the area of greatest significance for. the music of that time, namely in the Germanic countries, a tendency to undo the work of emancipation, with the result that political and cultural restrictions were introduced, restrictions that were only gradually removed in the course of the centuries. Thus it was not by accident but as by force of events that the ־ first great Jewish composer, Felix Mendelssohn, was a baptised Jew. During this first period of emancipation it was, not possible for a Jew to find most the elementary ,conditions necessary for the detection and development of his musical talents 7
except by conversion to Christianity which rapidly removed all barriers cutting off the ghetto from the European spirit. From the time, however, when the spirutal emancipation from the ghetto was completed in the course of the nineteenth century, the Jews have taken their share in the musical life of Europe to such a paramount degree, both in quality and quantity, that they must be acknowledged to possess special aptitudes in this, as in so many other spheres. Let it suffice to mention such names as Meyerbeer, Offenbach, Anton Rubinstein, Goldmark, Max Bruch, Mahler, Schonberg, Milhaud, Ernst Bloch, Ravel. It must be admitted that no ■ genius of the calibre of a Beethoven is to be found amongst those names. But where is there a nation that can point to a Beethoven for the period after the entry of the Jews into European musical life ? The truth is that not all periods of history are equally and without distinction capable of expressing themselves in every branch of Art. Consider for a moment how short, not more than six to eight decades at most, were the periods ־ when, for example, sculpture flourished under Phidias and Praxiteles, or painting under Rembrandt and Franz Hals, or poetry under Goethe and Schiller, or, last but not least, the era of the Prophets in the time of Isaiah and Jeremiah. Unique events called forth by unique conjunctures of favourable conditions occurring once every thousand years or so, and which might be compared to high tension in the atmosphere which is discharged by thunder and lightning and then followed again by complete darkness. So, too, music has its special conditions and imponderables. When, at about the period between Bach and Beethoven, there was brought about a conjuncture לתוך החיים המוסיקליים באירופה ? לא כל התקופות שוות ביניהן ללא־הבדל לסמל על־ ידי האמנות. of these conditions and imponderables, the Jews were still living in the ghetto, and when. finally the barriers of the ghetto were overcome, the art of Music had passed its zenith for Jews no less than for non-Jews. It may be that it is just that idea of “modern functionalism”, an . idea which musical, even more than other, circles were so proud to have achieved, which will have first to be overcome, and we must once more regain faith and belief in destiny in order that our innermost emotions may become worthy of being purified and exalted by music, that most mystic of all Arts; it may be that mankind must once again learn to love each other before they can hope once again to receive “this kiss of the whole world” from another Ninth Symphony. And where in the world is there another spot where mankind, whether believers Or unbelievers, whether Jews or Christians or Mohammedans, are so irresistibly drawn into the ban of a well-nigh inconceivable' mystic atmosphere as Palestine ? Is there any country more pre-destined to redeem the world by a new and a third Gospel of human dignity and of human love than this Palestine of ours, which even now is being largely repeopled as a refuge from the hatred of the world and which is being transformed by the love of its inhabitants from a wilderness into a Garden of Eden ? And the Orchestra of this land, ever old and ever new, has before it not merely the task of aiding, by means of strengthening their cultural life, the inhabitants of Eretz Israel in the work of upbuilding, but their aim should further be to prepare, the ground for a musical culture which may, should some day the times again be propitious, present mankind with a mighty creator of music. ב א ט ה ל ר ק ו ד י ם 1 1 ש פ י □ FOR DANCING AND EVENING קטיפה שחורה עם ב 1 ק ל BLACK VELVET WITH BUCLE 10

TOSCANINI by Paul Stefan (A Biography of Toscanini by Paul Stefan is Published, in German and English) In speaking of the most famous and certainly the greatest conductor of oyr times, words are capable of little more than drawing sketches of his personality, and life. Born on March 1867, in Parma (thus he is in his seventieth year), Toscanini was trained as a cellist at the Conservatory of Music in his native town, where he also learned piano and composition. While still in school his schoolfellows appreciated him more as a future conductor than as a cellist. His career began as cellist in the orchestra of a travelling Italian opera company touring Brazilian towns. In Rio, after a dispute with the orchestra, immediately before a performance of “Aida”, the Brazilian conductor refused to conduct, throwing the whole company into a dilemma. If the performance had not taken place, they would have been left stranded in a strange country without even the money to return home. At this point the nineteen year old Toscanini climbed up to the conductor’s desk, closed the score, and conducted the whole opera by heart B as he has done in all his rehearsals and interpretations ever since. The success was enormous. Toscanini, the cellist, ceased to exist — Toscanini, the conductor, was born. This success was repeated in nearly all Italian towns, and finally led him to the world-famous Scala in Milan. In1• these years of wandering, Toscanini became intimately acquainted with all the operas of his own countrymen, particularly with the great works of Verdi, who was still living at that time, as well as with those of Wagner. In fact, Toscanini conducted the first performance of Puccini’s “Bohême”, It was through him that many (Continued on page

(Continued from page 12) of Wagner’s operas were first introduced to the Italian public. With Wagner’s “Meistersinger”, one of his favorite works, Toscanini began his activities at the Scala in 1898. After a glorious period of activity in Milan, during which he effected many reforms, he left in the middle of the .1903■ season on account of a dispute and took the next boat to Buenos Aires, where he conducted operas. In 1906 he was back in the Scala, where he stayed until 1908. From there he went to New York as director of the Metropolitan Opera, increasing its brilliance, until Italy’s entrance into the World War. Toscanini spent the war years in Italy, conducting frequently for War charities to which he contributed almost his whole fortune. In 1920 the Scala which had been completely reorganised, engaged him as director. Until the end of the 1928/ 29 season, whenever Toscanini conducted, it became a great occasion for the Scala’s public. The Crowning achievement of his activities was the taking of the whole company — including choir, orchestra and technicians — to Vienna and later to Berlin. Certainly an opera ensemble had never experienced such a triumph. In 1930 Toscanini took the Nev. York Philharmonic, which he had conducted throughout the 1929—1930 season, on a wide European tour. That summer he conducted a Bayreuth performance for the first time, giving particular brilliance to this festival, and again in 1931, but this was for the last’time. The following year, 1932, there was no festival, and in 1933 Toscanini stayed away as a protest against a regime which refused to allow his two friends, Bruno Walter and Otto Klemperer, to conduct in Germany. Instead Vienna friends persuaded the Maestro to conduct in the Salzburg Festival and in. OBERON OVERTURE by Karl Maria von Weber (1786—1826) W eber’s Oberon, completed in 1826 and performed in the same year in London, is the swan song of the composer. The weak point of the opera is, as in most operas of that period, the libretto. But even if the whole work cannot be saved with the most skilful of alterations, the Overture remains a piece of immortal romanticism. The flute and clarinet passages in the introduction, count with the first bars of Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture (which appeared in the same year) as the beginnings of musical impressionism. The elfin flight is portrayed with the simplest of means. As opposed to Mendelssohn, who approaches more closely the classical masters, Weber must be considered as the adherent of opera, understanding the pictorial interpretation of situations. The overture is composed of themes formed out of the opera. The method of using themes and motives leads the way to Wagner and his Leit-motiv system, but what in later times sank to the vilest form of musical interpretation, the potpourri, has been overcome in this overture by the skill with which the themes and motives from the opera have been united into one complete and satisfactory whole. 20

THE SECOND SYMPHONY OF BRAHMS T he youthful genius of Brahms was discovered by the great Jewish violinist Joseph Joachim. He took the promising musician to Schumann who introduced him to the public in his famous article “New Paths”. Here was a new link in the chain of the great classical masters. Brahms combines Bach’s austerity, Beethoven’s strength and Schumann’s poetry in his comprehensive personality. With out being a reactionary, Brahms maintained the old tradition. Especially in his rythm, he advanced this tradition without developing a spirit of revolution. Like Beethoven, Brahms found his second home in Vienna. Remaining a bachelor, he sought and found the fulfilment of his life in the delicate, charming Austrian spirit. In none of Brahm’s symphonies is the feeling of light and sun so strongly expressed as in the D-major symphony. The opening is saturated with the freshness of spring. The second theme, a duet for viola and violoncello in F-major, is steeped in quiet wistfulness; but this is no sentimental wistfulness, it has the deeper content of folklore. In the development, all the themes and motives are elaborated with great art, reaching their climax in the coda,, where one can almost picture the bursting forth of the first buds of spring. The broad cello theme of the second movement may portray the deep (Continued on page 24) הסימפוניה השניה מאת ב ראה מס ( 1833-1897 ) 1 - ן גאונות של בראהמם הצעיר נתגלתה על־ידי הכנר היהודי הגדול יוסח יואכים. 22
