THE PALESTINE ORCHESTRA is about to start its second season. Looking back on the enthusiasm with which it was received in its first year,' its founder Bronislav Huberman may claim with satisfaction that the orchestra already figures after so short a time as an important part of the cultural life of the country. It was while we were in Palestine, as it happened, that Signor Toscanini conducted the Palestine Symphony Orchestra, composed of some 70 Palestinian Jews, in six concerts mainly devoted to the works of Brahms and Beethoven. On each occasion every seat was occupied, and it is noteworthy that one concert was reserved for some 3.000 work-people at very low rates and that another 3.000 attended the Orchestra’s final rehearsal. All in all, the cultural achievement of this little community of 400.000 people is one of the most remarkable features of the National Home.’ Three distinct tasks had to be faced. First, to provide a new home and new opportunities for those musicians who have lost their previous means of livelihood. Secondly, to focus the varied musical energies latent in the country so as to create a centre of music in Palestine and at the same time give to our people a musical standing of international level. Thirdly, to unite men. and women from different countries speaking different languages and belonging to different social groups, helping them through the medium of musical life to reach the common goal of a normal national existence. Among the musicians the majority have come from countries of Jewish persecution, and the selection had to be rigorous in view of the fact that the artistic claims of a Toscanini had to be satisfied. The growing fame of the orchestra soon made it desirable for other able young artists to join it. Our call to participate in its work is already considered by them as an honour. Continued from page 5sible for us this year to raise several instrumental groups, to still higher efficiency. Huberman visualized from the beginning that Palestine Was a land of unlimited musical possibilities. Nowhere else was the percentage of latent musical appreciation — as he realised-so high. But the land is young and in a rather unsettled state of cultural development. It is too early yet to expect a“ ■ definite standard in musical taste and knowledge. . The more . gifted a young■ man or a young nation, the more is it necessary to point unmistakably to the ideals ahead. The best method is not to teach but to show. The orches- t tra therefore was created not only to respond to the need of the day but to anticipate the call of to-morrow. There may be some who think this ambitiontoo extravagant for so small a country, but quality never depends on. quantity. Countries ;such, as for example, Switzerland, have contributed as much to the history of moral welfare as some of the largest nations 1 in the world. Since not everybody, is “ capable of becoming a musician, widespread talent for music always bears the seed of dilettantism, ■ and the best method to fight against this "i danger is the setting of :the highest . possible standard. Such is the spirit in which the orchestra was conceived which Toscanini already thinks worthy of conducting a second time. Anyone who has ever attended one of our concerts and not only listened to t the music but tried to grasp the feel-‘ j ings of the audience, will understand . what .we mean by describing the J foundation and the work of the or- I; chestra as a social and not only a ! musical achievement: in fact medium for transforming a crowd into a community. We fervently hope that the ■ memory of all those inspiring hours, listening to the works of the great musicians of the past and of the present, will help to unite all the 5 •ncrs nsen pioneers and give them strength and courage to pursue their common efforts for the National Home. And for others who are not involved in the Jewish search--for a new way of life, .we try to provide music in. its noblest form, such aS may afford relief' and joy to the wearied mind and the restless soul. 6

At the first performance of this symphony,-the programme described it as being “More the expression of inner ;motions than a pictorial description” although no mention of this was made in the score. This shows us Beethoven’s fear that the listeners would approach ths symphony in the same way as some travellers visit ah art gallery — they pass through it with a guidebook; only to see if the painted objects correspond to the description. Beethoven was afraid that a listener might ask his neighbour: Has the, “thunderstorm” already begun or is this still the “Peasant’s merry-making”JAP The first movement is designated as “pleasant sensations on arrival in the country”. Beethoven did not intend to describe, for example, the arrival of the bus in Nathanyi. His: appeal to the audience was a higher one ; he wished them to follow the musical line of the composition, and not to dwell on the picture evoked by the idea of a bright morning in the country. Still, the Pastorale is definitely a kind of programme music, not the first of this kind, but certainly;, the first which corresponds to our modern idea of such music. No rules made for listeners. would have saved them from the danger of misunderstanding it, had he himself not been, able, through his deep love of nature, to avoid the commonplaces of merely descriptive music. This symphony is remarkable from another point of view also. We generally look upon Beethoven as the stern fighter against fate. In the Pastorale he has for once given up fighting. ועל מעוד זמש שחור או בחול Black or blue velvety Suede triple concerto ,Beethoven’s so-called “Triple Concerto” is one of those works in which the Master of tragic and heroic mood tries to escape the heaviness of sternness and joins less strenuous elements for a while. The work therefore fits in well between the Pastorale and the Eighth Symphony. It' was composed for his friend, the Grand Duke Rudolf of Austria, himself an excellent pianist. But Beethoven was no courtier. The way he uses the three instruments in a congenial manner is proof of his democratic mind. When he first offered this work to his publisher, Breitkopf Haertel, he was not successful. How happy any publisher of our days would be to get such an offer but once in his life ! The first Allegro gives the three solo-instruments many opportunities to display the various possibilities of their technique. The Tutties always reestablish the right balance between the orchestra and the group of three soloists. The Largo is a fine example of Beethoven’s style in which every ear which is open to the inner voice of music finds delight. One only regrets that this lovely piece seems somewhat brief. Earlier than one would expect there starts a Rondo alia Polaicca The rhythm of the Polish dance had already come into fashion by the middle of the eighteenth century, but it is remarkable how Beethoven uses it, ■ reaching at the end a still higher climax by changing over from a three- beats to a two-beats rhythm. 13
EIGHT SYMPHONY I he Eighth Symphony, though composed years later than the Pastorale is’ also o® a definitely gay character. There is, nevertheless, a great difference between them. In the Pastorale Beethoven is himself in the midst of the events which he echoes in his work. In the Eighth Symphony־ his mind overcomes the sorrows and diffii- culties of life,;' he e'ven laughs at them. The way in which Beethoven rises above the troubles of his disease will remain an everlasting proof of the force of the spiritual world. The themes of the four movements are short and intense. The First .Movement AllcgrolpivaCe ct con brio — starts without any introduction and from the very beginning we seem to gather the whole story. The Second Movement is the famous Allegretto scherzando — the character of which has so often been the subject of discussion. It is actually the slow movement of the :'Work, but the. gaiety of the rhythm and the term scherzando have often induced interpreters to play it as a scherzo. The piece is gay, it even bears the scherzando character, and nevertheless it is the slow movement of the symphony, and only a genius could solve this paradox. Berlioz hasgSaid that ‘this Allegretto scherzando is one of those creations which are without pattern and without “pendant?^ they come to the artist over-night as a revelation; he writes them down without pause and when we hear them we are amazed.’ In the Tempo di Minueito the gaiety, reaches a still higher note. In the trio the horn seems to signal the climax of boisterousness let", loose in the Allegro v/wceK the final movement. We listen to a fantastic dance. The .heavy body of the orchestra seems to have become ethereal.
