JACOB GIMPEL was born in Lemberg in 1906 and at the age of 5 years started to play the piano. At the age of 12 he gave his first concert followed by a concert tour in Poland and at the age of 15 he finished the Lemberg Conservatoire and went to Vienna to study with the famous Steuermann. At 17 years of age Jacob Gimpej gaveShis first concert in Vienna and then toured Holland playing for the first time with an orchestra (under Pierre Monteux, internationally known conductor)? For the last two years of a successful world career he ,has collaborated with Huberman and now returns from a tour of the Dutch East Indies and Australia where he appeared with immense success both as soloist and with Huberman. JOH. WOLFG. A MAD. MOZART "Jupiter-Symphony" in C-major Allegro vivace Andante cantabile Menuetto : Allegretto — Trio Finale : Allegro inolto 1 he “Jupiter” symphony is the last of the three symphonies which Mozart wrote in. the summer of 1788; all three in the amazingly short period elapsing between the 28th of June and the 19th of August. And not alone were these wonderful symphonies created in this period but also a number of , smaller works. Why the C-major symphony was called “Jupiter” even Jahn who wrote the standard biography of Mozart does not know. But no name could be more apt, expressing as it does the Olympic serenity of the composition. A reason for its popularity is that in spite of the large structure of the work it has a certain simplicity which is characteristic of Mozart at this pcr- I iod. A year before he had written “Don Giovanni”, the climax of the intensity of his dramatic and theatrical creation. By 1788 he had not left the world of emotions but he was expressing himself entirely ■through the medium of perfection of form. Even in the opera of that period “Cossi fan Tutti” dramatic action is neglected in favour of pure musical expression. The “Allegro vivace”׳ starts with a Triplet motive which could b־• the commencement of an overture but already in the third bar a contrasting motive is introduced and interpreters of Mozart have likened these two motives to the male and female elements. It is not very probable that Mozart had this in mind but it is noteworthy that the entire symphony is built up of simple harmonic elements and contrasts of this kind. But what a monument is created with such simple means ! ’ The second movement, Andante Cantabile, is really Cantabile since it starts

The loveliness of the instrumental ensemble with its characteristic combination, of parts is a forerunner of the vocal ensembles of “Cossi fan Tiitti”. The “Minuetto” unlike those third movements where the character of dance exists only in the nomenclature, really retains - the dance and again demonstrates that in this period of productivity we find a return to a much earlier style of Mozart’s. The Finale : Allegro molt one of the most astonishing pieces of music ever written, is almost entirely in the fugal form. In this case Mozart returns not only to his own youth as in the “Minuetto” but goes further back to his ancestors, to the greatest of them all, Johann. Sebastian Bach. But the movement has nothing of Bach’s Severity and mysticism. It is even not a regular fugue. He uses the method of writing in parts but his world remains not that of dogma but of earthly, human emotions. Aviv, 48 Allenby Rd. FRÉDÉRIC CHOPIN (1810-1849) Concerto in F-minor for Pianoforte and Orchestra Maestoso Larghetto Allegro Vivace. C/hopin has written very few compositions other than his marvellous pianoforte works and orchestral literature does not number any of his works among its masterpieces. Nonetheless the piano part of the two Concertos where he has given his beloved instrument’ orchestral accompaniment contains some of the most exquisite music ever written in compositions of this kind. They are- both youthful works, composed in the years 1828—29, although published later and certain deficiencies of the not very elaborate and somewhat awkwardly treated or5

chestral score which have so often been, criticised, may be explained by the fact that the 19-year old Chopin had at that time hardly left the tuition of his piano-teacher in Warsaw. This music teacher was an excellent man and pedagogue who had, however, neither been inclined nor was able to give his marvellous pupil any idea of theoretic and instrumental training. Nor was there ׳at that time any orchestra in the Polish capital that could have helped the young composer to acquire some experience in orchestration. However, in spite of the bareness of the orchestral texture (and unsuccessful attempts at re-scoring the Concertos have been tried more than once) the Concertos have so far re-; mained beloved favourites of pianists and public and of everyone who is able to appreciate their unique charm and the incomparable poetical inspira-, tion that gave them birth. The F-minor Concerto, first of the twó concertos to be composed, was published only in 1836. Robert Schumann, a critic with a remarkable gift for discovering rising stars, wrote of this concerto that he was ready to give the heads of nine music critics for this one concerto ! Schumann felt very strongly, what has so often been overlooked, that Chopin’s music is a mixture of the western Franco-Italian style of the period and national Polish music. The rhythmical energy of the Maestoso and the Allegro vivace of the F-minor concerto has its origin in the national dances such as the Polonaise and the Mazurka. By chance we know the story which is attached to the Larghetto. A letter from Chopin to his beloved friend Titus has come down to us in which he speaks of the lady of his dreams, לו his ideal to whom he has devoted himself, since six months and who has inspired this Larghetto. A man of over fifty, he is still discovering fresh fields in which to indulge his musical fantasy. He has discarded the French expressionist form, of which he was the chief exponent and is trying to find a new means of expression based on old forms of music. In turn, influenced by Debussy and Moussorgsky, Russian and Far-Eastern folklore, by the mysticism of Scriabine and the early forms of religious worship, by classic Greek music and even by the highly-civilised art of Bach, he has yet managed to maintain an undisputed originality. The period of Stravinsky’s life in which he produced the ballet “Petroushka” bears the distinct mark of another arid not purely musical influence, that of. the great Russian producer Diagileff for whose famous Ballets Russes Stravinsky wrote his still unrivalled dancepoems “L’Oiseau de Feu”, “Petroushka” and “Le Sacre du Printemps.” “Petroushka” in particular has ever since remained extremely popular as one of the most exciting and graceful of modern ballets. Originally Stravinsky conceived this work as a brilliant piece for Piano and Orchestra, corresponding in its main features to the second part of its present form. But on Diagileff’s suggestion it was re-written in the form of the ballet music in which we now know it. “Petroushka” was realised as a purely מספרת בראו BRAVE BARBERSHOP JERUSALEM, SANSUR BUILD. 1968 TELEPHONE EX HAIRDRESSER ANNA PAVLOVA, LONDON You will enjoy your friends and yourselves... For the evening and Society — 890 נעל מעור וחש שחור או כחול Black or blue velvety Suede 490 Mils musical work and not aS a merely descriptive one and can be enjoyed perfectly without the accompaniment of dance and scenery. Indeed, the four parts can be considered as a huge symphony, corresponding almost to the classical scheme of Allegro, Adagio, Scherzo and Finale. The material on which the themes are based, however, is entirely drawn from the fountain of popular songs and dance rhythms and retains thoroughout a bizarre, farcial and one might even say frenzied atmosphere — very characteristic''of Stravinsky at this period — yet these same themes are of such exuberant variety, so masterly is the virtuosity of the technique employed that we may consider “Petroushka” as one of those durable and lasting musical productions that will long outlive their own time. Although “Petroushka” can. be enjoyed for its purely musical qualities yet it may be of interest to describe the puppet play which the four parts of the symphony illustrate. i. Village Fair The first scene depicts the lively bustle of a typical Russian village fair with all its familiar figures: the drunken peasants, the teller-of-tales, the organ-grinder, the man who plays a musical box. Each of them has his special dance with its particular rhythm. We may note the ingenious combination of organ and musicbox, both playing their different tunes at the same time during which the organ-grinder blows a cornet-a-piston and his dancing partner accompanies her pirouettes with a Triangle. We hear the merry sounds of a brass-band passing by and then drums and tympani announce the opening of the puppet show Which the puppet master (a' magician) presents with a sweet cadenza on the flute. The three puppets appear before the open curtain. Playing, the magician coaxes them into life and Petroushka, the Moor and the Bal13

lerina lose the rigidity of their wooden bodies and begin their famous “Danse Russe”, one of the most inspired melodies of the work. It is interesting to note the importance given to the piano in this section of the score. It is, as is very common with Stravinsky, used exclusively as a percussion instrument. The brazen hammering at quavers and semiquavers gives colour to the whole orchestra. 2. *In the House of P e t r o u s h k a g. A t t h e M o o r ’ s The second and third scenes deal with the tragedy ■that overtakes the three puppets now endowed with human passions. Petroushka and the Moor fight for the Ballerina’s favours and their wild dances convey the mutual hate and jealousy which consume them. Meanwhile the coquette, to the strains of a sensuous valse, excites them more and more until they fight at which she swoons. 4• Village Fair (dusk) The fourth scene takes us to the Fair once more where as dusk approaches the gaiety becomes more and more wild. The whole stage becomes a whirl of dancing figures while in the centre a dancing bear is put through his paces to the sound of clarinet. All at once everytyhing is brought to a standstill as Petroushka rushes out of the puppet theatre pursued by the Moor who strikes him to the heart. Terrified at the effects of his magic the puppet master appears and tries in vain to bring Petrouchka to life. Nothing remains but to drag the corpse away while in the semi-dark- ness of the falling night the crowd, now quiet, disperses. The magician remains alone on the: silent stage and then the ghost of the unhappy lover, Petrouchka, appears on the roof of the theatre, mocking, beckoning and threatening his master until the magician runs from the scene in fear and dismany. 14
