The greatest artistic interest attaching to a musical endeavour is not sufficient to attract him if his human feeling have been hurt. And as for the Palestine Orchestra, even the Maestro’s profound and personal interest in it would not bring him here a second 3
time if he did not think that musically it were important. This is a tribute to our musicians for which they are humbly thankful. The memory of the extraordinary days which they spent a year ago with the world’s greatest conductor here in Palestine will remain for them indelible. As Toscanini first appeared on the rostrum their hearts stood still. He went through the first rehearsal without comment. Knowing how severe and exacting he can be the Orchestra awaited his verdict trembling, fearing he would not deem it worth his while to continue. Their joy was all the greater therefore, when the Maestro continued his rehearsal with many interruptions and much criticism but with evident approval. Since Toscanini’s first visit the Orchestra has worked unremittingly inspired by his first principle that in art there is always something more to be learned. There have been other excellent artists conducting the Orchestra since Toscanini. Each in turn added to its technical skill; refined and augmented its possibilities of musical expression by presenting examples of different musical styles. Through their renderings of the great musical works the musicians, too, have learned that there is no absolute law of interpretation. The musicians need only feel the conductor’s mastery and belief in the composition in order to give their wholehearted co-operation. Toscanini evoked this feeling at once. And in turn the musicians were aware that this greatest of conductors was also the humblest in his constant searching for the deepest meaning of the masters. His devotion to art, his sincerity coupled with simplicity impressed them above all. And so his artistic severity was always felt as something far beyond the personal. The felt linked up with a personality which ignoring age, preserves an endless enthusiasm and an eagerness which the youngest of musicians might envy. He first became known to the general European public when, his violin concerto was played in Berlin in 1901 by Arrigo Serato. He also became popular in Italy as a writer of songs and chamber music. Among his many compositions for orchestra there are variations ona theme by Brahms and on Schubert’s celebrated “Roes- lein,, Roeslein”. The Overture to the Goldoni comedy “Baruffe Chiozzotte” being presented to-night is often given on the concert platforms of Italy. Although light and easy to understand it never degenerates into mere superficiality. The story of the opera deals with fisher life in the village of Chioggia on the shores of the Adriatic and Sinigaglia has introduced folk songs of the locality. The composer has always been much interested in folk music and in many of his compositions has used the folk melodies of his birthplace, Piedmont. F. MENDELSSOHN-BARTOLDY (1809-1847) Symphony No. 4 in A major ("Italian") Aiendelssohn composed five symphonies of which the two most important and the best known owe their origin to impressions gathered in for- eign lands. In the third• symphony, the ‘ Scotch” by means of melancholy, mel°dies he conveys the at- Wosphere of the foggy highlands and the gloomy Lochs of these severe t northern regions. These letters must be among the most beautiful ever written by a musician and they show in every line that the blessing of Goethe was on the head of this composer who, when a boy had been told by the poet "Thou art my David, and if ever I be sad and suffering thou shalt exorcise my bad dreams with thy music, and I will never throw my spear at thee!” “My symphony is going to be the gayest piece of music I have ever made, especially the last movement; for the Adagio I haven’t as yet got anything, I must wait until I have seen Naples because that must have its part in the game” so Wrote young Felix in one of his letters where he reports on the religious ceremonies, picture-galleries, sunsets and the hundred and one incidents of his tourist life. And indeed, the irresistible impetus of the first movement with its never-slackening buoyancy and the warmth of the growing sound of the violins in A major is music of mirth and jollity. Actually it conveys more of the artist’s own exuberant state of mind than the national cha racteristics of Italian popular tunes. The same may be said of the balladlike AndanteinD-minor and the third movement ■ which, neither Scherzo nor Menuetto, joggs happily, along its sweet “Moderato con moto” air which encircles the short, very romantic horn-call of the Trio. This music vividly recalls that of the “Midsummer Night’s Dream”. It is a tragedy that the C major symphony, perhaps the only one that has succeeded in rivalling the great “Ninth” should have been Schubert’s last symphony and one of the last works of his short life. There is an old musical superstition that after Beethoven, Fate would prevent any composer from producing more than nine symphonies. Remembering Schubert and his successors Bruckner and Mahler, makes us wonder whether there is not more to the supersitition than mere words. The C major symphony, called the “Great” to distinguish it from the sixth in the same key — the “small C major” — was more than any other of his works, the cause of his being reproached with the well-known "heavenly length”. It lasts a full forty-six minutes but its heavenly beauty makes one forget its “heavenly length”. It is hardly to be believed that the board of examiners of the Philharmonic Society in Vienna refused its first performance on the grounds that the symphony was “too Continued on page 16 15

After this harsh verdict the score actually remained buried for more than a decade in a drawer of one of Schubert’s nephews where Robert Schumann, one of the most profound music critics of his time, discovered it by mere chance. The enthusiastic article in which Schumann announced his find to the musical world, induced Mendelssohn to perform the symphony for the first time at the Leipzig Gewandhaus Concert Hall in 183g with enormous success. Since then it is considered by many competent critics to be the most important symphonic creation after Beethoven’s and has remainded a favourite of music lovers all over the world. Schubert had a predilection for the key of C, the simplest, clearest and I'ghtest of all and besides using it for this symphony, some of his most important compositions, such as the String Quintet, the “Wandererfan- tasie”, two earlier symphonies, the "Grand Duo” for four hands etc., are written in this key. Schubert was not much interested in overcoming the laws of formal construction. He clung to the classical four parts and their form arid the originality of his symphonic Work must be looked for in his new and striking conception of harmony. His beautiful melodies are characterised by the sweet melancholy of a short and tragic life although at the same time he often makes use of gay Austrian songs and dances. The second movement contains some of Schubert’s sweetest and most melancholy instrumental melodies, richly elaborated in the form of a song in five parts. The strange harmonic twilight, wavering between major and minor, is used to the highest perfection in this Andante con moto. The magnificent finale an Allegro vivace with the following two themces The daemonic energy of the huge and dramatic Scherzo Continued in next column is an amazing outburst of youthful exuberance. As it surges along to its stupendous climax the listener has to give up every attempt at following and analysing its ingenious details and surrender entirely to an ineffable, mystic happiness. 18
