Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770—1827) : Symphony No. 3 in E flat-major ־ ’ ־ (“Eroica”.-) Beethoven composed his third symphony in honour of Napoleon, whom he admired as a friend and hero of the people, and he intended that it should express the nobility of a hero such as he believed Napoleon to be. Later, when he ■received the news that Napoleon had declared himself Emperor, Beethoven angrily tore off the page of his score on which he had written Bonaparte’s . name and changed the title of his symphony to “Eroica”.K • The “Eroica” is the first of the master’s symphonies where he makes the first steps towards a larger conception of the symphonic idea. The first movement in which the formal proportions follow no precedent, foreshadows the later . “romantic”? Beethoven. Other* themes besides the two main subjects are introduced and the development is of unusual interest. The solemnn, heavy rhythm and mournful melody of the Marcia funebre express the grief of a people at the death of a great hero. The third movement is Beethoven’s first orchestral. Scherzo. Beethoven’s Scherzos retain the outline« of the three-part form but the dimensions are much enlarged and in this’ particular Scherzo the first part is expanded to admit considerable, development of the main theme,! ending in a full-fledged coda and includes a Trio, beginning with the famous fanfare for horns. The Finale is in the form of a set of variations." More than one theory has been expressed as to what the . Mendelssohn - Bariholdy (1809—1847) Overture, Nocturne and Scherzo to “Midsummer Night’s Dream” Mendelssohn, most classical of the “romantic” composers was only. 17 years old when he wrote the Overture to “Midsummer Night’s Dream”? The Overture is carried out in the sonata-form. All the fairy-tale atmosphere of Shakespeare’s play finds in this Overture its most adequate musical expression. The Nocturne and the Scherzo are light and illustrative pieces. The lovely horn theme of the Nocturne harmonising with the bassoons and the agitato theme played by the strings give a fascinating picture of night in the fairy forest. The Scherzo is a brilliant masterpiece in composition where form and romantic poetry are united in a perfect way. Friedrich Smetana (1824—1884): Overture to “The. Bartered Bride” i As a result of the awakening national feeling of the middle and eastern European nations in the 19th century, their music too began to free itself from the yoke of Western European musical tradition. The Bohemian composer Smetana was the first to give expression to this national feeling in music and to take a deliberate stand as an exponent of the folk lore of his native country. | “The Bartered Bride” one of the most beautiful and popular of comic operas, was first performed in 1870. The composer brings on to the stage types of Bohemian peasantry in a very realistic manner. The Overture, which is carried out in Vivacissimo from beginning to end, foreshadows the gaiety and freshness which characterise the opera. After a magnificently constructed Fugato, the strongly marked main theme 1.begins with full force. The price of tickets has been reduced for Members As a member of the Palestine Orchestra Association you are entitled to obtain any category of seats at the cheapest rate available. Our new system of payment allows for the purchase of Subscription tickets and Membership in the Palestine Orchestra Association for 1938-39 season on the most convenient terms. Membership Cards and Subscription Tickets can now be obtained with greater ,ease due to our new system of “Payment in Stamps^ When applying for your ticket you must pay at least 20% down.
