Richard Wagner ־ ( 1883 — 1813 ) Overture to ״Tannhauser" The great artistic movement of nineteenth century romanticism attained its climax in the person of Wagner. Although he composed almost entirely for the operatic stage, yet the innovations which he introduced in melody, !harmony and orchestration were so .far-reaching that his compositions’have profoundly affected the whole trend of symphonic music.; Among his outstanding musical achievements were his operatic reforms. He' greatly enlarged the orchestra and made it more important musically than the singers. He developed the use of leit-motiv, that is, of recurring musical themes which -portray various ideas or persons iff the drama, so that the music affords a constant psychological commentary upon the action. . These reforms were not yet completely developed by. the time “Tanhauser” -whs written. The Overture, still in classical form, shows the dramatic idea of the whole opera, the struggle between heavenly׳ and earthly love; The “pil- grirh’s theme” is the musical symbol of Tanhauser’s saved soul. After the Venusberg episode and Tannhauser’s love avowals to Venus, the initial theme re-appears ■accompanied by the full orchestra and brings the Overture to a conclusion as if conveying the message of the victory of divine love. ; Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894) Marche Joyeuse Chabrier at first took up music as an amateut while he was studying in Paris. Franz Schubert ׳ ( 1828 — 1797 ) 'Unfinished' Symphony in B minor Schubert began his symphony in Bminor in 1822, in appreciation of his election to honorary membership in the Musical Societies of Linz and Graz. He completed two movements, maae some brief notes for a Scherz- and then set it aside■- why, no one knows. For years after his death it lay ignored, finally receiving its first performance in 1865. Melody sings through the symphony from the very first note. A sombre introductory phrase, given but by the cellos and basses in octaves, ushers in the principal theme of the first movement, which has been described as “a plaintive autumnal song,'accompanied by a rustling of dead leaves”. The second theme is in G major and its. lovely melody comes as a happy contrast to the atmosphere of sadness of the whole first movement. The second movement seems to convey a sense of purification after the struggle with fate has come to an end. These two movements, which may be considered a masterpiece of form, !style and expression are admired and loved throughout the world. Continued Emmanuel• Chabrier impressionism. His music — “Gwendoline”, Le Roi Malgre Lui, (operas) Espana — (symphonic poem) and his compositions for piano — has an extraordinary brilliance, verve and wit., In the element of colour which he introduced he anticipated Debussy and Ravel. Vincent d’lndy, the great French composer, wrote that “Chabrier’s style is Chabrier himself, with his verve, altogether southern and spontaneous, with his good-nature bordering on the heroic, with his wealth of images and sallies, always unexpected, and above; all with his flow of tenderness, a fundamental trait of his genius, the 9 דגץ שובדט ( 1828 — 1797 ) הסימפוניה "הכרת — גמורה ” בב־מול הסימפוניה "הבלת־־גמורה" בב־מול.'
