INTRODUCTION to the Palestine Orchestra's Fifth Subscription Concert There are several ways of compiling concert programmes: compositions may be chosen from one period only, or even from one composer; the programme may combine works of entirely different epochs; the development of a form or certain means of expression may be illustrated. When the institution of the public concert Came into existence — that is in the first half of the 18th century—only contemporary compositions were performed׳^ and pieces by the older generation of composers — among them Johann Sebastian Bach I — seemed “old-fashioned” and “out of date” to the concertgoer. (Imagine your attitude towards the Palestine Orchestra in case they would exclusively present contemporary music in their subscription series !). Our times prefer programmes with music from many periods and by different composers. A concert organisation is not independent of the wants of the public — to-day just as 200 years ago. Then the, concert was something quite new, and there was but little concert music available because up to that time composers had written music for their court, their church, or their patron — music of a kind that did not appeal to the rising bourgeois class. Thus new forms and styles had to be found to meet the wishes of the concert public; and the result was the development of the symphonic form with its variety : a quick and dramatic movement followed by a slow and lyrical part, the Minuet with its dance character, and a quick and rapturous final movement. The continuous change from quick to slow, from vigorous to tender, and from one key to another (Continued on page 4) מבוא לקונצרט החמישי למ 1 ויים של תתזנוורת הארץ־ ישראלית ־ כל תכנית של קונצרט מצטינת בהרכבה ובמטרתה המיוחדת לח * ז מכיל । (Continued from page. 2) (not only in the symphony as a whole but also in the different parts— as for instance in the constructon of the first movement with first and secondary subjects) makes the symphony lively, effective, and interesting; •And the effect is strengthened by the dynamic composition. It may be mentioned in this connection that the crescendo was first employed in this music, and that with the swelling of the orchestra’s sounds the listeners sometimes gradually rose from their seats (as we are told by writers of the period). Joseph Haydn 1) was the first great master of this new form, and his Symphony in G major, the opening item in to-night’s concert, already shows an advanced stage of the symphony. Instead of mighty chords often preceding the first statement of the themes, these “calls for attention” which come from old Italian opera and still usher in Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony, Haydn gives a short Adagio introduction which has its historical origin in the French Overture. The Allegro is started by the wood wind instruments which play a leading part throughout the work while the secondary subject is given to violin and flute. The working-out section, destined to demonstrate the manifold shapes the motives and themes can take, exemplifies Haydn’s masterly art of variation, the orchestration playing no small part in this lively and interesting section. The second movement — Allegretto — has given the symphony its name “The Military”. At all times, (Continued on page 9) i) Franz Joseph Haydn (1732—1809), wrote his first string quartet in 1755 and his first Symphony in 1759. The “Military Symphony” was composed in 1794, two years after Mozart’s death and six years before Beethoven’s first symphony. 4

(Continued from page 4) the public liked to remember musical works with the aid of illustrative names; in this case the “military” character is seen in the accompanying percussion instruments and the trumpet calls near the end of the movement. The Menuetto and Trio— the first flowing and melodious, the latter strongly rhythmical — show us Haydn th;e Austrian, while the concluding Presto; -which is built up from one theme only, is rather dramatic in its sudden changes of key and intensity and in its working- out of ■the subject. Haydn’s music has to be understood as society music, as an entertaining art. It is only with Beethoven that the composer becomes an. independent and self-conscious artist who lives but for his music. . The composer’s inner life and conception take the place of “orders” from outside. Robert Schumann’s 2), Piano Concerto belongs to the “romantic” school which is characterized by composers whose personal confessions can be found in their works. Poetry, painting, and the sounds of nature come to the aid of music; and the composer “gets lost in an ocean of sounds” (as a writer of the romantic period remarked). With the composer’s, changed attitude towards music we, on our part, have to receive it differently too. It is not the problem of form and development which interests us most in a work like the Schumann concerto, but it is the colour, the poetry of sounds, and S as this is a solo concerto the virtuosity of the solo instrument and its peculiar sound character. The
orchestra has a secondary part in this concerto, it really only “accompanies”. The piano leads from the very first bar of the Allegro affettuoso; and every new thematic development is first announced by the soloist. There is a steady changing of keys in this first movement (from A minor to C major, A flat major, E minor, A major — to name the most important stages only) before it closes in the fundamental A minor key. The Intermezzo, one of Schumann’s most poetical pieces of music, directly leads over to the final Allegro vivace with its vigorous rhythms ; the major key dominates throughout the movement. Thé German- romantic school to which Schumann belongs started as a national movement against the cosmopolitan attitude of the preceding epochs. In other countries nationalism became an even more important factor in music. In Russia, for instance, folklore was introduced into the music, and the works of her great masters are incomprehensible without that element. Peter Hitch Tschai- kowsky 3) is much influenced by Western music, it is true, but his national character often shines through, as in his Serenade for Strings in to-night’s programme. After the first movement with its romantic character and the popular Waltz reminding us a little of French salons, there is a Slavonic mood predominating in the Elegy ; and the Finale is completely built on Russian national folkmusic. Other nations followed her. Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Scandinavian countries and others — last but not least the Jews — have contributed to national music literature. In the works of our contemporary Manuel de Falla i) the national Spanish idiom plays an important part. His ballet “El Amor Brujo” (“The Demon Lover”), from which a concert-suite is presented to-night, sets to music a romantic story from the life of the gypsies. Listening to this music again demands a different disposition of mind. Not melody or harmony — but orchestral colouring, rhythmical power, and folklore elements are the foundation of creating and receiving such music which — we should not forget — was conceived as music for dances. Towards the end of the 19th century romantic music was in a state of decay. At ■the same time the declining century produced a series of masterworks in quite another sphere: in entertainment music for the bourgeois society. Johann Strauss the King of Waltz, is the symbol of his period, of a joyful society which he enchanted with his waltzes and polkas — symbol of unburdened times which seem to have gone for ever just as the city of the master’s triumphs is no more the happy Vienna of the last three decades of the 19th cen- (Continued on next column) 4) Manuel de Falla (born 1876 in Cadiz) has composed 2 ballets, operas, a concerto for harpsichord and 5 instruments etc. The ballet “El Amor Brujo” was written in 1915 and popularized after the war by the great Spanish dancer La Argentina. 5) Johann Strauss (1825—1899), son of a famous conductor/ violinist and composer (also named Johann).
