The compositions chosen by the conductor are all works by Slavonic composers— Russian and Czech 9 the exception being a work by Ernest Bloch who belongs to the “Jewish Music” movement. Although a certain conformity of thought prevails in the works played — the evening could have been headed “Nationalism and Music” —. it is most interesting to note the different approach of the composers to the problem of national music. Michael Glinka, the first of Russia’s national-minded musicians, is still to a large extent influenced by Western music. Antonin Dvorak is an elemental composer who never saw a problem in national music because his own works are as natural a part of his homeland’s soil as the mountains, valleysM and rivers of Bohemia. Ernest Bloch, the Jew, is bowed under all the eternal problems of his race and strives towards a music which is uninfluenced by folklore proper but nationally characteristic from the spiritual point of view. Modest Moussorgsky, without any doubt the most individual of Russia’s composers, far from being understood in his own lifetime and not fully appreciated yet in our century, represents realism in music and achieves a typically Russian atmosphere in the choice of his subjects and the general character of his style. Alexander Borodin finally is much influenced by the oriental element in his country. We are thus THE PALESTINE ORCHESTRA 1

In listening to national music and trying to catch its true spirit one should realize its origins. The cosmopolitan ideas of the “enlightened” era and the great Viennese classical school had found their last and mightiest expression in Beethoven’s ■Ninth Symphony with its typical message “Be Embraced, Ye Millions !”. A reaction followed. In Germany it took the shape of “romanticism”, a unique mixture of nationalist tendencies and poetical music. In other countries the revival of the language, the national legends, and folksongs go hand in hand with a new approach to music. Nations which had been under the spell of Italian or German music during the whole of the 18th century now try to renounce that influence and to create something unmistakably their own. In Russia — as in other countries S Italian musicians and composers dictated musical taste well into the 19th century. It was one of these Italians, Catterino Cavos (1776—1840), a kind of musical dictator of Petersburg, who first discovered the melodic peuliarities of Russian folksong and who employed many original melodies in his operas. So he prepared the soil for the work of MICHIAL GLINKA1) the “father” of Russian music proper. The composer himself was never satisfied with the fruits of his efforts and regarded his own music now as “definitely too German’’ and now as “too Italian in character” ; but although he may be right in some instances he has certainly laid the foundation of a development which is still in progress. The “Russian and Ludmila”- Overtiire is Characteristic of its composer. Its construction and (style do .'not differ much from the Western scheme of ■the period, and it is only the second of the two main themes of :the piece that has a slight Russian touch, especially in the course of its development. The large., .symphonic work of the evening is the FIFTH SYMPHONY, op. 95., in E minor by ANTONIN DVORAK2). While Smetana, Who has Dvorak’s senior by 17 years, is ■to be regarded as Czechoslovakia’s Glinka, Dvorak shows a happy union of national and supernational spirit which may well be called singular in music. His symphonies are good examples of this, and among them the “New World” Symphony is the most popular. It was composed in the New World during Dvorak’s extended visit to the United States and com-■ bines the melodic and rhythmic influence which American folkmusic had on the composer with his strong national Bohemian character which .always shines through. Contrary to statements often heard or read about (Continued on page 9) 2) Antonin Dvorak (1841—1904) composed operas, symphonic poems, symphonies, 16 Slavonic■ Dances for piano duet or orchestra, chamber music and songs. The FIFTH SYMPHONY is really Dvorak’s ninth — and last — symphony. It was written in New York from January, to May 1893, and its first performance there in December 1893 brought the composer a triumphant success. 4

Dvorak himself has firmly pro tested against these assertions in a letter to ■the conductor and composer Nedbal: “Don’t believe this nonsense that I have made use of original American melodies! I have only been inspired by the spirit of these national songs”. The Symphony opens with an A d a g io Introduction in which the first appearance of the main theme is prepared. This then appears, played by the horns, in the beginning of the Al legro mo Ito and is distinguished by its strong rhythmical structure. The syncopes show American influence and they characterize other themes of ■this movement and of the whole symphony as well. After the powerful and dramatic first movement, the quiet beauty of the famous Largo follows which has. been subject to manifold arrangements (among them one for choir). The main part of it (in D flat major) is interrupted by a slightly more agitated section at the climax of■ which the theme of the Largo is combined with the first and third subjects of the first movement. Then follows the rapturous Scherzo, with a kind of grotesque Waltz as middle-section. In the concluding Coda, Dvorak again quotes die main theme of ■the first movement. The last movement, Allegro con f u o c o, a piece of masterly construction, has again a strongly rhythmical first subject which alternates with a contrasting, Bohemian coloured theme. Russian group of composers. A vast Jewish population inhabited Russia, and the longing for the re-union of the scattered people into a Jewish nation and for the creation of a culture of their own is comprehensible not from Jewish history only but also from the general trend in nationalism at that time. Just as the Russian composers (and similarly the Czech and others) started to collect the folksongs of their nation, so the Jews began to collect theirs; and the leading Russian group of musicians took an active interest in Jewish folklore as well. Here are the roots of Jewish music. ERNEST BLOCH the first performance of whose “EVOCATIONS” we are going to hear tonight, does not directly belong to the kind of Jewish music which is mainly based on folklore. He maintains that not the folksong but the spirit must characterize Jewish music, and so he turns to the Bible for inspiration. He does not try to model his melodies after folksongs but rather to build them up on ancient scales, as for in- stance; the pentatonic (five note) scales. “Evocations” — a recent work of Bloch’s written in 1937 — has no typically Jewish subject as other of his compositions. But its main themes are built on certain pentatonic scales; and by this the “Evocations” are closely linked to his ,, specifically Jewish works. Bloch’^׳; technique .is that of the refined Western schools of late romanticism and impressionism. There is not much of melodic development in the three parts of this ;:symphonic suite. The colour of the orchestra and the continous swelling 3) Ernest Bloch (born 1880 in Geneva) made the U.S.A, his home in 1916 and just retruned there after 8 years’ residence in Europe. His latest works include a Violin Concerto, the first performances of which were given by Szigeti in Cleveland U.S.A, in December 1938 and in Queen's Hall, London, on March 9th of this year. 10

and softening of sounds accomplish the main effect of the work, the purely emotional character of which may already be noticed in the title “Evocations” and the subtitles of the three parts “Contemplation”, “Hou- ang Ti” (God of War), “Renouveau”. The individual and progressive character of the great Russian composer MODEST MOUSSORGSKY4) may best be characterized by his own slogan: “On to new shores!”, Like all really great characters in art Moussorgsky did not care for public opinion or outward success but only for the realization of his own artistic aims. He emancipated himself from Western musical influence on the one hand and from the oriental element on the other hand and strove towards a pure and realistically clear style of expression. Not the immaterial world of fairies but something more real: Russian history supplies-- the main subject for his operas. “KHOWANT- CHINA” describes — similar to Moussorgsky’s most famous opera “Boris Godunow” — one of the most dramatic epochs from the history of his country. But this opera is more lyrical in character than the earlier “Boris Godunow”. The composer 4) Modest Petrowitsch Moussorgsky (1839—1881) wrote his famous “Boris Godunow” during the years 1869—1871. The “Khowantchina” was •begun 1880 but not completed. The programe comes to an effective conclusion with the “POLOVETZ DANCES” by ALEXANDER BORODIN B), an orchestral suite on the Ballet music from the opera “Prince Igor”. These well-known dances are based on real Russian folklore, and a certain thematic relation between the subjects bind the different dances !together. The short and pregnant themes; the fierce rhythms, the dynamic gradation, and the impressive orchestration have made this series of dances one of the most popular pieces of Russian orchestral compositions. 5) Alexander Porphirewitsch Borodin (1834—1887) left his principal opera “Prince Igor” unfinished. It was completed after his death by Rimsky-Korsa- kow and Glazounow and first performed in 1890. 1 — 1st subject of last movement 2 ■— 1st subject of second movement 3 — 1st subject of scherzo 11
