INTRODUCTION TO JOH. SEB. BACH'S "ART OF THE FUGUE" Dr. Peter Gradenwitz The “Art of the Fugue” is not only the summing-up of Johann Sebastian Bach’s life work but also a monument of what contrapuntal art had achieved in the course of more than half a mililenium. And, alas, it is the last monument of that art which had been associated with a; community of men of the same creed and belief, and of the same will to show themselves equal beings, each performing his part in life as in music for the sake of the Lord. At the time Bach was writing his huge last work (that is, in the years 1749/50) that world was in its final agony; the same years already saw the rise of a new art: symphonic and virtuoso music for the concert hall, a means of entertaining society, an art which aimed at dominating and not at serving. That revolutionary era had no regard for ■tradition and disposed of the sublime art of Johann Sebastian Bach as “old-fashioned” and “learned”. Bach’s own sons were instrumental in creating a new style, each of them in his own way, and■ the late 18th century meant Philip Emanuel, his eldest son., when speaking of the “great Bach”. For a century Johann Sebastian’s manuscripts lay unnoticed and unappreciated on the library shelves, and the “Art of the Fugue”, one of the few compositions printed in. Bach’s lifetime, remained practically unknown for more than 175 years. What may be called a Bach “Premiere” took place in Leipzig on June 26th 1927 at St. Thomas, the place of work of Johann Sebastian Bach. The “Art of the Fugue” is one of those' unique and sublime artistic manifestations which are most complicated and elaborate in structure yet such pure and absolute works of art that their human appeal does not depend on “understanding”. It is “abstract” music not aiming at effects and yet impressive as only few other works. To what extent this abstract character is preserved is evident from the fact that Bach did not score the fugues for any special instruments but simply for soprano, alto, tenor and bass “voices”. The work consists of two large parts. The second was left unfinished by the composer, but the print of the first part — the one given to-night — was corrected in proof by Joh. Seb. Bach himself. This part, con- 'sisting of 11 fugues, may be subdivided into three sections. The first and third sections comprisel.four fugues each, and the middle section has three fugues. The essential of a fugue, as may be known, is the running of a ■theme through the different voices and the development of ever new combinations between the theme in its primary form and its derivations (as inversion of intervals, lengthening and shortening of metric values). A fugue opens with a “statement” of the theme which is followed in turn by an “answer” of the second entering voice. There are certain rules for building a fugue which represents the purest form of contrapuntal “imitating” style. But if you look at the vast number of Bach’s fugues which are but crowned by the work we hear tonight you will drop the view that this is “learned” music only. None of ■these fugues resembles the other, and every one is as full of individuality and expression as each of the great works written in the course of 150 years of music that we summarily term "symphony”. The short ■guide which may be found on the next page, can but indicate the wonderful planning of the "Art of the Fugué”. Only the primary theme in its different appearances comm be noted, and the host■ of secondary and derived subjects had to be left out of consideration; But even this short analysis, can convey an impression of the way Bach gradually increases the means of musical expression thus achieving a dramatic׳ composition that ;;glows us to ;forget the constructive mind behind the work. $1
