style of each instrument in the orchestra.■ His mastery in an makes us. forget that this instrument was rather a young mem er o t e family and that Mozart’s work belongs to the very first concertos written While the flute and oboe were among the favourite instruments o t e ar0<^ age, there arose the need in the many-coloured orchestra o t e pre c ass-ca classical age for an instrument filling the gap between the heavi y moving assoon. with its deep and buffonesque sounds and the pastoral beauty ot e o oe , an instrument that could combine the agility of the flute and the so t eaUty o t e viola. Indeet, the clarinet is the viola of the wind section, and the nee or sue a voice was particularly felt at a time where the subsidiary orchestral voices were gradually gaining independence. Clarinets are found in the early decades of tne 18th century, it is true (the invention of the instrument being ascribed to a J. Christian Denner of Nuremberg who just before 1700 attempted an improvement on the old "chalumeau”, a term derived from a Latin word meaning reed ), but they came into regular use only in the early days of the symphony, the first outcome of the period of the public concert. As the new symphony was meant to excite the bourgeois listener it was built on effect, 'colour, and contrast; and it is no wonder that the clarinet with its wide range of expression and its great power of modulation first appears prominently in the works of the pioneer of the symphony : the Mannheim concert-master and orchestra-leader, Johann Stamitz. While the clarinet has become one of the most versatile and highly-favoured instruments of the orchestral body, clarinetists have not been provided with a great amount of solo literature by the composers. There are some early chamber music compositions of the pre-classical period, a few lovely chamber works with clarinet by Mozart, and compositions of Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, Alan Frank, Honegger, Milhaud, and Arthur Bliss, besides the concertos of Stamitz, Mozart, Spohr, Weber, Stanford, and Busoni. Most of the works we have, are inseparably connected with the names of the performer virtuosos for whom they were written : Bliss’ witl. Thurston, Brahms’ with Muehlfeld, Weber’s with Baerman, and Mozart’s with Stadler for whom the present concerto was composed. Mozart’s clarinet concerto is accompanied by an orchestra of two flutes, two bassoons, two horns, and the usual strings. The solo part itself makes use of all tech- ' nical and tonal possibilities of the instrument, here singing a tuneful melody, there expressively leaping from a high point of its compass to the deep register, here leading the thematic development or playinog in a kind of duet with the violins, and there being content with providing a colourful background to a tune in the strings. The three movements are the usual ones: Allegro-Adagio-Allegro (Rondo) ; the Adagio has become the best known part of this unduly neglected work, created with "inspired sagacity” (Tovey) and yet not only capturing the mind by its splendid craftsmanship but entrancing our hearts by its stirring beauty. Second Symphony in D-Major, op. 36 Ludwig van Beethoven The Beethoven symphony that closes to-night’s programme leads us back not only to the key but also to the world of the opening Mozart symphony. Not the "titanic” Beethoven of the later symphonies speaks to us in the Second Symphony but a composer who is still satisfied with expressing his musical thoughts and inspirations withi the scope of the Viennese symphony. Many a listener will be amazed to learn that this composition was nevertheless criticised on the occasion
INTRODUCTION to the 4th Subscription Concert / Dr.. P. Gradenwitz Symphony No. 35, m D-Major (The "Haffner”) (K. 385) W. A. Mozart To-night’s concert of classical■ music opens with a symphony of Mozart’s that was not originally meant for the concert hall but for a festive celebration in the house of Siegmund Haffner, the highly esteemed, burgomaster of Salzburg, Mozart’s native city and his place of work till he chose to settle in Vienna, the city of the classics. It was in Vienna that Mozart wrote the present work while occupied with his opera "II Sergaiio”. His father had asked him to compose with the utmost speed a new Serenade for the Haffner family which had already been so furtunate as to receive the precious gift of the "Haffner”-Serenade (K. 250) on the occasion of Elisabeh Haffner’s (the mayor’s daughter) wedding six years earlier. The composition that Mozart finished in haste in 1782 and at once forwarded to Salzburg was another Serenade opening up, as' was usual in a Serenade, with an introductory March symbolising the marching up of the musicians, and containing two light dance movements in Minuet time. When Mozart got the score back from Salzburg, not quite a year after its creation, he had completely forgotten the work (presumably on account of his predominant interest in the opera at the time) and was so agreeably surprised at its quality ("The new Haffner symphony has greatly amazed me; I did not remember a note of it, and I’m sure it must make a good effect”, he writes to his father) that he decided to perform it at a concert in Vienna. For this performance he eliminated the introductory March and one of he Minuets and it is in this form that the work has come down to us. The composition now appears to be a regular symphony consisting of the four usual movements : an opening Allegro con spirito in sonata form, a lyrical Andante, a lighthearted Minuet, and a buoyant Presto. But the "Haffner” symphony never denies its original object: the grandeur of the first movement that reminds us of the festive brilliancy of a wealthy celebration* the sweet songfulness of the Andante that constitutes the "air” of the Serenade proper, the sparkling magnificence of the Minuet with its amiable Trio intermezzo, and the high-spirited Finale, are more characteristic of Mozart’s "Divertimento” and "Serenade” compositions than of his symphonies proper. It is, however, amazing to note with that wealth of refined themetic elaboration (the entire first movement being built on a single subject) and imaginative devices Mozart has enriched the customary forms of symphonic movements, and this in a work that was. hurriedly written in a couple of nights and sent on straight from the desk, movement after movement. The "Haffner” Symphony shows us Mozart in his happiest vein and his symphonic art under the obvious spell of the Viennese school of symphonists, especially of their first great master, Franz Joseph Haydn. Clarinet Concerto in A Major (K.622) W. A. Mozart From the happy Mozart of the "Haffner” Symphony, the beautiful Clarinet Concerto takes us to the last months of an unhappy life embittered by hunger, disappointment, and lack of appreciation, a life that came to a premature end on December 5th 1791, just 150 years ago. The clarinet concerto, composed in September 1791, just two months before Mozart’s death, is the composer’s last purely instrumental composition and has all the singular, and at times, unearthly beauty that is so peculiarly characteristic of the final works of men of genius in all the arts. In addition, the concerto is again proof of Mozart’s adaptibility to the individual
