The exile finds consolation in Nature. The pilgrimage starts again. Is it Ahasver, the Wandering Jew who, at the sounds of this canon leaves the shelter where he had been granted a short safe stay, to go out into the night? Fourth Movement. The final movement begins with a terrific eruption of indignation, of protest. In a letter to Bruno Walter, Mahler later called this movement an accusation against God. It is the eternal outcry of Job. Henceforth the pugnacious themes are almost all tuned to this tone of wild defiance. A singing theme in D flat major softly answers in the violins. Then appear the slow, descending fourths of the prelude which introduced the whole work. From these and the fighting theme a new chorale is built up which leads, back to a gradual quieting, to peace in Nature (prelude). The struggle is then once more resumed but triumphant sounds bring tidings of the hero’s salvation. This Book of Job, too, ends with the victory of Heaven. In 1909, Mahler wrote to Bruno Walter: "I performed my First Symphony here the day before yesterday. Strange things happen to me whenever I conduct these works. An ardently pained feeling crystallizes within me: What a world this is that produces such sounds and figures as images. Pieces like the Funeral March and the consequently erupting storm in it appear to me as a burning accusation against the Creator. And in every new work of mine there arises afresh this call (in the words of Mickiewicz): "That You are not their Father, but their Tsar”. This only occurs to me while I conduct, afterwards everything fades away at once, otherwise one could not live on.” After the Concert • KAETE DAN'S BAR Attractive Rooms Exquisite Cuisine Prof. PILZER at the Piano 97 HAYARKON ST. who was his favourite author at that time, in the following words: From the days of youth — youth, fruit and thorns. Spring and no end. The introduction describes the awakening of Nature in the early morning. And on the third movement (canon) he comments thus: "Stranded”. A funeral march in the manner of Callot.” For another performance he compares this movement with the parodistic picture, well-known to all children: The Hunter’s Funeral, from an old book of fairy tales for children — the animals of the forest accompany the coffin of the dead ranger to its grave; hares carry the pennon, ahead of them a band of^Bohemian musicians accompanied by cats playing music, toads, crows, and so forth. The relationship between the most important themes of the symphony and the "Lieder eines fahrenden Geseljen” ("Songs of a Wayfarer”) which Mahler wrote in Cassel in 1883 and 1884, is clear. The First Symphony was completed in 1888. In Cassel, Mahler was involved in an unhappy love affair, recorded in letters to the friend of his youth, Friedrich Loehr. It is related in the text of those songs which he wrote. himself, in the spirit of the “Wunderhorn”. These letters, these songs and the music of the symphony provide a uniform picture which does not require any further commentary. First Movement. Morning voices. Free nature. Slow fourths of the woodwinds descend on the long-sustained A of the bassoon. A very soft flourish of the clarinets replies. Distant trumpets. Calls of the cuckoo from which there develops the chorale in the horns. " The slowly mounting line of the violoncelli gravely and solemnly closes the picture of the landscape awaking out of the dawn. The prelude is followed by a merry song also contained in the "Songs of a Wayfarer”, "Ging heut Morgen uebers Feld, liegt vor mir die schoene Welt”. ("This morning, as I roamed through the fields, there lay before me the beautiful world”). The optimistic key of D-major conveys to us a hymn to Nature which swells to ever merrier sounds until it rouses the whole orchestra to an energetic fortissimo. In the development, the themes of the prelude varied at first, then attain a lamenting expression. The chorale of the horns restores the firmness of the prevailing atmosphere, and leads over again to the gay "Roaming through the fields”. This movement ends triumphantly, an apotheosis of youth. Second Movement. A briskly stamping laendler, flying out, vigorous. In the side theme in C sharp minor which bears, the denomination "wild”, the catastrophe is already announced. The octavo-leaps in an upward movement promise no good tidings. And only now do we. perceive that the gay dance music hails from a wedding which his sweetheart celebrates with another man. In the "Songs of a Wayfarer”, there is written: "When my sweetheart celebrates her wedding gaily, I spend my day sadly”. Yet in this sentence the wedding festivities are objectively heard. The subjective mood of the author is reserved for the next movement. — Before reaching that, we witness in a very tender trio the whole sweetness of love in remembrance of past happiness. The reprise of the scherzo follows. Third Movement. Gives a special character to the. whole symphony. It was also understood least at the first performances and met with the most outspoken dislike. The main part is a canon based on the folk-song "Frère Jacques, dormez- VlUS^ • counterbass starts, accompanied by the kettledrum, the bassoon continues, then violencello, then bass-tuba, always the same theme.. But by' the oboe which defiantly interjects a second theme, a note ■is struck which until then !had been unknown in music: the tone of Jewish self-contempt, that irony whose sharpness so often also destroys the atmosphere in Heine’s work. After the canon has faded away, the parodistic colour of the movement gains strength in a new theme; with cymbals and the large drum a work-day atmosphere is introduced. The stirring grief knows no limits of self-degradation. Farewell from his sweetheart. Later the
INTRODUCTION to the 6th Subscription Concert / Dr. Max Brod Overture to "The Magic Flute” by W.A. Mozart. Mozart began the composition of "The Magic Flute” in the spring of 1791• A “magic opera” had been commissioned for . a suburban theatre but ■in Mozart’s hands the work. Written in the year when the shadow of death already hovered over him and when he also composed the Requiem, became a grand festival play of humanity, We perceive its profound seriousness in the solemn introductory sounds of the Overture and in the sustained ;'tones of the short prelude. The jocund jollity of an "opera for the people” is then reflected in the principal movement which is executed in the form of à fugue 7With upward-skipping fourth's which give a special character to the whole piece Before■ the development we once more hear, the solemnly imploring chords. Then follows the light principal theme, softly shaded with pensive melancholy which from the reprise up to the end, however¡ makes way for’ a tone of powerful, gay determination. A common key-note sounds from both the gravity and the gaiety: the note of :Liberation; Concerto for Piano and Orchestra by Maurice Ravel.. One of the last scores written by Ravel. It shows him as an accomplished, master in the construction of the musical form ;aspiring-to classical examples (in this case •to the sonata movement without the liberties otherwise granted to solo concertos), bold in harmony, pblytonal, starting from popular themes, One feels transported to the Basque homeland of the composer, to the frontier of France and Spain; the tender artificial structure of French music and the rhythmical élan of Spain have both a share in the work. The first theme of the quick first movement immediately displays the. particular art of Ravel’s■ "long melody”,' as it has .attained world fame in his "Bolero”. The ;piccolo flute brings' this sprightly theme. The piano is, in the beginning,־only ah accompanying instrument .together with the strings. After the completion of ,the whole elastic theme, the trumpet repeats the main part,, and only now does-the piano come to the foreground with ■a slower transitory little־ movement which is followed by the beautiful cantilena (also performed by the piano), and the bassoon carries the melody to its end, on the high register. The witty, rhythmically interesting development leads to a repetition of all three themes and culminates in the !masterly piano cadence which has developed from the cantilena. Employing the first theme the piece leads brilliantly upward until it draws to its close. In effective contrast, the adagio retains the quiet lied-form, First a piano- solo eliminating the-orchestra, then again a long melody expressing the same nostalgic atmosphere, that prevails throughout the piece־, in constantly new, but similar changes, and again and again seems to return to the start. After a short intermediate movement, the same song appears in the English Horn, adorned by piano passages to the: end. The ׳third'-movement is a frolicsome, rondo-presto, A short introduction;! the. principal theme, first in the piano, then in the strings This marked, rhythmical . motif is. repeatedly replaced by a flourish of trumpets theme, it then appears in the harp, in the violoncelli, in the clarinet, ■in the ,-piccolo flute, then in all wind instruments jointly Finally the piano in conjunction with die trumpet gives the answers in a flourish, and thence it rushes on With more and more increasing strength towards the orchestral close which brings the work to an end on a note of utter gaiety. 'Symphony. No. 1 by Gustav Mahler. Thé programme of die First Symphony is better known to us than those of ;the other symphonies Mahler himself‘ wrote a programme for a performance in Hamburg although he generally disliked programmes and ,did not believe in their _ appropriateness. But in his opinion, they, can convey something to one who knows the work already. Thus he explains the first movement • in the spirit of Jean Paul
