Bargain Sale in all Household Articles PHONE 4948 time and time again in rising superipr to his fits of melancholy although he early anticipated and indeed, was soon aware, of how little earthly happiness yya§ to be granted to him. In the so-called "Heiligenstadt” testament, written for his brothers during his grave, illness and in its profound ethical sentiment^, one of the grandest of human documents, Beethoven writes: "I almost took my own life. It is only art that restrained me. Alas, it seemed impossible to leave the world before I had produced all that I felt I would create. And thus I managed to live this wretched life.” Could any artist be more impelled to write a veritable "symphony of fate than this sorely-tried man? This symphony, which is without any-external programme, is constructed according to purely musical laws despite the abundance of ideas contained in the work and is really a model example of the classical symphony. The first movement contains two opposing principal ideas: the dominating "fate theme ״ and a tender, consoling theme. The fate theme, however, chiefly carries the dramatic movement. A presentiment of the happiness of grief overcome seems to be given in the second, slow movement with its ardent main' melody !which is soon painted in in variations! An allegro, that ■follows as the third movement, has in common with the scherzo (usually found at this place in Beethoven’s works) only die quick movement and the three-part form. It is filled with an uncanny, ghost-like atmosphere. Fate •again displays its dangerous might. The four notes of the original motto-theme, the "fate motif”, rhythmically and melodically changed, re-appear in their warning power. In a bridge-passage of enormous suspense •comes the relieving outbreak of the Finale that like a storm sweeps away ,all preceding grief with its• triumphant proclamation of victory. single characteristics but only in its entirety and that no concessions have to be made in order to understand his compositions. To us he appears to be a very great and complete personality. His work is a cosmos in which there is reflected the whole gamut of human feelings. Behind the stone facade, we find besides the profound severity à world frill of humour and cheerfulness, an abounding temperament which often reaches a level of joviality. This composer, frequently regarded as inaccessible, has his "easy-going” aspects just as much as has, for instance, Mozart, who has often been unjustly looked upon only as a representative of a carefree, optimistic attitude towards life yet shows traits of genuine melancholy and a demoic touch. Ohly through unprejudiced hearing can one penetrate into those musical spheres Which cover an unlimited range of emotions. The Piano Concerto in D-minOr is the earlier of the two of these works which Brahms wrote. The first performance in 1859 met with no success. The hut was ÿs yét too hard to crack for an audience that expected a "virtuoso” composition. As was Usual with Brahms, hé worked at this composition for a long time, repeatedly rejecting his designs and seeking for new forms. In his first studies thé young master had the idea of writing the •whole work in the symphonic structure. In thé varied texture' of voices,, thé piano is like a thread, a scarlet thread. The first mighty principal theme With which the orchestra opens this ;work of three movements is unmistakable Brahms. This melody, which rings out with broad wives, has something of the spirit and greatness to be found in old folk epics A soft song in thé violins takes1 the role of the hard introductory tones and the consoling atmosphere continues until the piano sets in — not with a virtuoso, soloist effect — but as a voice born out of the orchestra which now commences, a sad 1 but at the same time restrained lament. In the course of the rich parade of rhemes^ the performance of a particularly poetical melody is reserved for the solo instrument Hie abundance of themes is worked but in the development with logic and with V e1 °”• T° ihe SeC°nd slow “0^ent, Brahms had originally applied the heading Benedictus qui venir in Homme Domini” ("Blessed be •he who cometh m the name of the Lord”). INTRODUCTION to the 7th Subscription Concert /Dr. Else lewertoff Overture to ■the Cantata "The Sea Gate” Abraham Daus In the competition organised by the Palestine Orchestra at the beginning of last year, a prize was awarded to Abraham Daus for the orchestral work being played to-night. Born in t9o2, the composer studied composition under Courvoisier and Pfitzner and in this country he works as conductor, composer accompanist anc!music teacher. Among the׳ works which have been performed the following have me:with much success: "Cycle of Rachel’s Songs”, variations on a Yemenite theme and two Cantatas: "These are the Lights” and "The Sea Gate” The last was written on the occasion of the third anniversary of Tel-Aviv Harbour, the Overture being composed later. ׳.׳ ׳ < L .■׳ The Overture was designed for a large orchestra. It presents a work of an expressly dramatic character. Except for a few interruptions, it runs at a quick pace and is distinguished by its marked themes and its effectively graded construction A sharply cut first motif, blown fortissimo by the trumpet like a signal, presently leads in medias res. The ascending seventh, which plays a decisive role in the whole composition, form¿ the close of this short call. It is rounded iip to a theme by the woodwind sequences climbing upward on the augmented triad which constitutes, as it were, the reply. This principal theme of two parts has a function similar to that of the first theme of a classical sonata: all developments lead back to it again and again. The second theme is also built on the whole-tone scale like the principal theme. In contrast to these' agitated melodies there appears yet a third important theme that bears the character of a broad, hymn-like song. This theme is the melody of the "Song of Tel-Aviv Harbour” the idea of which was derived from a talk by the late Dizengoff. After short moments of rest, the urge towards movements again becomes apparent. Whole-tone scale chords lead naturally to a new outburst of the principal two- pa rtpart theme whose call, only slightly varied, sounds again in the trumpet and is answered by woodwind figures. Moments of meditation ensue. Swinging triplet sequences in the flutes spread an idyllic quiet, After, a short halt, an allegro starts molto vivace. A hobbling bassoon mot־/, the rhythmically varied inversion of the principal theme, ends in the characteristic ascending interval of a seventh. By appearing in the various -■״ices, either complete or broken up into its essential parts it allows of many rich combinations: Now, when the composer is more intent on drawing ■than on colour, the transparent play of voices leads to a slowing .down of the movement. The scraps of the motif are constantly transformed until they merge : into the signal of the principal theme which now sounds in the bass clarinet and is continued. In the ensuing presto-finale, the call whirls through the instruments with its incisive leap, of a seventh and again prepares the. way for the simultaneous appearance of all three themes which now maintain their dominating position up to the triumphal coda of rhe Overture, Concerto in D Minor for Pianoforte and Orchestra Johannes Brahms, It has become the custom for musical experts and dilettanti to characterise the compositions of ■Brahms by such epithets as severe , inaccessible , turne inwards” and so forth. It is die master’s mode of writing which has induced people to speak thus; his not striving for outward splendour but for the most adequate tonal reproduction of thé musical idea. These definitions of Brahms work, which arc not entirely unfounded/ are ׳ apt, however, to make thé audiencé prejudiced and in many countries have stood in the way of a teal understanding of Brahms. It therefore must be at once statéd that this composer’s, work can be grasped not from
